Australia's cost of living has surged to its highest level in over two years, with the consumer price index jumping 4.6% in the 12 months to March.

Data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics revealed a sharp acceleration from the 3.7% annual inflation recorded in February, marking the steepest climb since September 2023.

The spike was primarily ignited by a volatile energy market and the cessation of government relief measures.

The transport sector was the primary catalyst for the monthly surge, with automotive fuel prices skyrocketing by 32.8% in March alone—the largest monthly increase since the data series began in 2017.

Sue-Ellen Luke, ABS head of prices statistics, attributed the record rise to escalating conflict in the Middle East, noting that average unleaded petrol prices hit 228 cents per litre.

While fuel dominated the headlines, housing remained the most significant long-term pressure point, rising 6.5% over the year.

Compounding these costs, household electricity bills have soared 25.4% higher than last year following the expiry of state and Commonwealth rebate programmes.

Despite the headline volatility, the annual trimmed mean—a key measure of underlying inflation—remained steady at 3.3%.

On a quarterly basis, the CPI rose 1.4 per cent for the March quarter.

Economists are now closely watching the impact of the fuel excise halving, which took effect on April 1, to see if it can provide necessary relief to Australian households facing multi-year highs in essential spending.
