Origin Energy reports data breach affecting 4.8M customers

Origin Energy (ASX:ORG) confirmed a cyberattack compromised personal data across its 4.8 million customer accounts.

The disclosure follows an initial investigation launched a day earlier into potential unauthorised access to company systems.

"One of our key priorities is taking action to secure our systems," said Origin Energy CEO Frank Calabria.

Exposed information included customer addresses, phone numbers, and partial bank account or credit card numbers.

Following the announcement, the Origin Energy share price was down at $10.42.

The Sydney-based firm remains Australia's largest energy retailer, providing electricity, natural gas, and broadband services.

In addition to domestic retail operations, the business holds a 20% ownership stake in UK supplier Octopus Energy.
