Loews (NYSE:L) reported second-quarter net income of $444 million, or $2.16 per share, up from $391 million.

Quarterly net income increased 13.6%, while earnings per share rose from $1.87 to $2.16 year over year.

CNA Financial contributed $294 million, Boardwalk Pipelines added $100 million, Loews Hotels contributed $48 million and Corporate added $2 million.

Book value reached $93.52 per share, while Loews held $4.4 billion of parent-company cash and investments against $1.8 billion of debt.

Loews said CNA benefited from higher investment income, while Boardwalk gained from contracting rates and its hotels recorded higher rates and occupancy.

Meanwhile, first-half net income reached $781 million, while $146 million of quarterly buybacks reduced outstanding shares to 204.4 million.
