Saudi-led group seeks EU approval for $55B EA acquisition

Share
  • An investment group led by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) has officially requested EU antitrust approval for its $55 billion acquisition of Electronic Arts (NASDAQ:EA).
  • The European Commission has established a July 22, 2026, deadline to reach a decision on whether to clear the transaction or initiate a formal investigation.
  • The acquisition, which also includes participation from Affinity Partners and Silver Lake, faces further scrutiny under separate EU regulations regarding foreign subsidies.

A group of investors led by the Public Investment Fund (PIF) filed for European Union antitrust clearance on Wednesday for the planned $55 billion purchase of Electronic Arts (NASDAQ:EA).

The European Commission will now evaluate whether the transaction risks creating an unfair competitive environment within the global videogame market.

This acquisition, announced in September 2025, reflects the PIF’s broader strategy to position Saudi Arabia as a central hub for the international gaming and sports industries.

In addition to standard antitrust requirements, the investor group must eventually satisfy EU rules designed to prevent foreign-subsidized companies from gaining an unfair advantage when acquiring European rivals.

The deal involves significant backing from private equity firm Silver Lake and Jared Kushner’s Affinity Partners, who are betting on the long-term revenue potential of blockbuster franchises like "Battlefield" and "Madden NFL."
